Spain

In the 50 years old history of the Albert Schweitzer Tournament Spain is one of the most successful nations. Beside the so longed for victory of the tournament in 1998 they can look back upon several other top places (2nd place in 1977, 1979, 1987, 1994, 2002; 3rd place in 1975, and in 2004; 4thplace in 1971) and count as the permanent inventory of the AST. In 2004 they stopped the since that day outstanding Argentinians in the semi-finals, but lost with 82:86. Then in probably one of the best games they defeated the Serbians after being far behind with 72:77. The Spanish game was marked by the guard Sergio Rodriguez and the forwards Jose Angelo Antelo and Carlos Suarez. After a short while the nearly unchanged team was celebrating the european championship title in their own country. At the AST 2006 Spain came in only 11th place.

Both in Europe and world-wide the Spanish U18 national team can be counted as oen of the best teams. In 1999 the World Championship was won, such outstanding players like the recent NBA star Paul Gasol were playing in the team. They credit themselves with other first class results (3rd place in 1995, 4th in 1983, 6th in 1991). Spain made the 9th place at U19 World Championship 2007. In Europe the title was won in 2004 and in 1998, the 2nd place was made in 1978 and in 1974, and in 1994, such as in 2006, 1990 and in 1976 they won the bronze medal. Spain: is suspected to be at the AST 2008 in one of the front places.
